Or have you listened to a speaker, (maybe right after lunch) who rambled on and on who inspired nothing but a sudden desire to grab a pillow? Have you ever been to a concert where you weren’t allo […]

In 2008, I decided to dive into this new media world to reinforce my position as a thought-leader.Mind you, I am a 45 year old technophobe and I am reminded everyday how much I do not know! With that knowledge, I seek to understand and learn every day.
My story is a good one, but comes more from sweat than strategy. In 2008, I started my sponsorship consulting company under the name of “Beeman (my last name) Sponsorship Consulting.” We sought to provide sponsorship valuation, advisory and sales representation services with a focus on retail destinations as clients. A short while later, I started a LinkedIn Group for Sponsorship and Marketing professionals called Sponsorship Insights Group (SIG).
The group membership took off with very little marketing and now stands at 4,600+. It is the largest one on the internet for Sponsorship and Marketing professionals to network, share insights and find exclusive discounts on vendors goods and services. My value proposition was simple to members: I would provide free quality content, a place to network and share information with others and a chance to learn more and find opportunities.
I quickly realized that the social media practices that I put in place generated a significant amount of recognition for Sponsorship Insights Group. Then, I realized there was more equity associated with SIG in the marketplace than BSC. So, I changed the name of my business to that of my group.
On January 1st, 2009 my New Year’s resolution was to learn how to blog. The following on that has lead to my being a source on recent articles on Tiger Woods sponsorship problems in Sports Business Journal and LA Times among others. I have also built a group on Facebook which replicates the LinkedIn Group and have thousands of followers on Twitter.
Recently we enhanced our website and secured a series of alliance partners. Now, we serve every need for sponsorship professionals and have broadened our services and scope to meet every need.
Now, I literally get inquiries for my services Every Day from properties and agencies throughout the world. They want to join my group, tap into our knowledge and seek our services. If you look at my profile, you’ll see that LinkedIn is a tool that I use on a daily basis for business.
Time? I’d say it was well-spent. ROI? Absolutely!

Every day, our members from our social media groups/fans/friends and followers tell us that they need effective sponsorship solutions, but struggle to identify cost-effective representation or services that actually deliver customized solutions for them.
On the property side, the options usually are:
A. Commission-only representation with no results
B. Retainer plus commission with lots of reports on “sales activity” but unsatisfactory results
C. Consultants who “value” their property, and provide “advisory services” but don’t actually help them sell
D. Go it alone mode. They use the shotgun approach to send proposals that either miss target, are miss-priced or poorly thought-out.
There are a few websites that “connect” properties with sponsors. Most of them are in BETA-mode and have yet to hit critical mass or have many success stories.
We came up with a model that meets the needs of the marketplace and serves our community at the same time.
Problems:
• Many properties don’t understand their value, have poor representation and need sponsors
• Many agencies spend too much time trying to get clients instead of providing services
• Many agencies are either too general or too specific with their competencies
• Many agencies have high overhead (staff, offices, equipment and travel) which creates higher fees
• Many agencies are geographically restricted with capabilities by the location of their offices
• Many talented former agency folks are looking for work as independent contractors
• Social media as a tool is under appreciated, underutilized and not understood
Solution:
• SIG uses social media and a virtual workforce to maintain a low overhead and worldwide team
• SIG has a natural pipeline of inquiries and sponsorship help from our huge social media community
• SIG outsources sponsorship fulfillment and sales to our members to meet client needs
• SIG consult with clients and then build a proposal according to their needs, time line and budget
• SIG is comprehensive, global, scalable, transparent, efficient, geographically and competency-relevant
Thoughts?
Yesterday I was interviewed by Diane Pucin of the LA Times about Gillette’s carefully worded decision regarding their sponsorship of him.
I was quoted in the article and wanted to elaborate on my thoughts as it relates to sponsorship and Tiger.
Premise: Man is inherently flawed. So, sponsoring a man, as good as he is, or people think he is; is a flawed model. Especially if you want your brand to represent perfection. While Tiger is an amazing golfer, he is human and therefore flawed. He is, as we all are, bound to make mistakes.
His mistakes were compounded by his public persona and endorsement portfolio making him out to be something that he actually wasn’t – an honest, good person with the highest morals, integrity and principles.
His success in golf was due, in part, to his relentless drive. This success led to confidence which was reinforced with more success. As we all know, there is a thin line between confidence and arrogance. He crossed that line with his personal behavior and it will cost him dearly – personally and professionally.
Here is the duality conundrum: those attributes which make us successful can also be our weakness. We must embrace and acknowledge this duality of our nature.
Now, to repair himself and his image, he must embrace the opposite of invincibility; humility. If he is humble, shows his vulnerability and is authentic; people (perhaps, even his wife) will eventually forgive and forget.
So, it all comes down to how he responds to this adversity. He can continue to hide, live a lie or show genuine remorse. If he does the latter, over time, he can come out of this and re-create himself more authentically.
Magic Johnson provides a good case study. Instead of being known as a serial philanderer who contacted HIV through unprotected sex with multiple partners which forced and early, ignominious retirement from basketball; he is now widely regarded as a visionary business leader and philanthropist.
Philanderer or philanthropist. What will it be Tiger? Can you make good of this?
The opportunity is right in front of you. Eschew and release all your sponsorship obligations. Then, ask the companies to give that money to causes for good instead of lining your already deep pockets.
For brand/sponsors: Embrace ideals and organizations/properties which aim to do good. Scandal is not created by organizations, but by corrupted or corruptible people.
