- Sponsorship Lie #212: “There’s Still Time!”One of the first things I do every day is check out what’s happening on LinkedIn. It’s such a great resource for advice and networking in our industry. One of the things I found this morning, however, was just a big fat lie. “There is still time to sponsor our unique event!” Okay, so it’s not an […]

Or have you listened to a speaker, (maybe right after lunch) who rambled on and on who inspired nothing but a sudden desire to grab a pillow? Have you ever been to a concert where you weren’t allo […]

I re-listened to the IEG 2009 Trends webinar and got a few more nuggets that I wanted to share and some insights/analysis:
- Sponsorship spending grew by 11.4% in 2008 but is projected to only grow by 2.2% in 2009
- Of the nearly 17 Billion sponsorship dollars spent by North American Companies, most will continue to be spent on sports (68%), however, they project to only grow by 1.8%
- Of all sectors, sports is projected to be the slowest growing at 1.8%
- Sectors with biggest growth opportunities are festivals, fairs and annual events, associations and member organizations (4.4%).
Given these numbers, what are some suggestions for sellers? (more…)

I recently taught a workshop on sponsorship for real estate developers looking to make up for their increased vacancies with new revenue from untapped resources. An overview of the presentation is below and more information can be found on my LinkedIn profile.
With the retail sector in dire straits, developers need to be more creative with their marketing and partnership marketing (sponsorship) efforts. As traditional media is diminishing in effectiveness and marketing budgets are being slashed, retail developers need to think of themselves as a medium. They have a captive audience of targeted, spend-ready consumers.
Westfield seems to get it as does GGP, Simon and Macerich is getting it going as they have in-house business units dedicated to leverage their common-area assets. It is the mid-sized and smaller developers who don’t seem to be able to put programs together or realize its potential to drive revenue with a little investment. So, (more…)
I recently attended a webinar hosted by IEG on trends for 2009 and found it informative and enjoyed some very insightful comments by their Chairman, Lesa Ukman.

We created the following video to show how inundated consumers are with advertising.
Marketers need to find authentic ways to reach consumers where and when they are open to marketing messages.
They need to build a relationship and deliver real value. Break through the clutter video
As you know, I am always analyzing sponsorships – what works and doesn’t work. It gets easier everday, because sponsorship and advertisinsg is literally everywhere.
I am also a huge Lakers fan. I take my kids to games and we watch them on TV. My kids (5,6), are often more interested in the promotions than the action on the court. Sponsorship Insights Group member, Brian Gainor, recently blogged about the Lakers and one of their sponsors, Jack In The Box. The promotion is simple: Lakers keep an opponent under 100 points and win, the fans get a coupon for free tacos. The brilliant tactic and how it has legs is demonstrated by how it has caught a buzz via people blogging about it and talking about it.
Here are two examples: My 6 year old daughter loves to read the scores in the sports page every morning and says, “hey daddy, free tacos again. Let’s go to a game.” Wow. talk about a mutual brand benefit – new ticket sales and desire for tacos at Jack in The Box!
Another is the fact that their is actually a facebook community for Lakers Taco Lovers! To learn more about Lakers sponsorships, contact, Linked in Sponsorship Insights Group member, Blain Skinner
Why are several of my Sponsorship Insights Group Members from LinkedIn staff on the Executive staff at IEG and hundreds of others in my group going to be at the IEG, annual sponsorship conference?
Because it is THE place to connect with peers, learn more about sponsorship and share ideas and opportunities with others in a great environment.
What do we have in common? Why am I blogging about this?
Well, I’ll be there and I am offering 10% off for the first 25 people Sponsorship Insights LinkedIn Group members. To join our group and get the code, click here and go to the discussion forum. It is the featured discussion.

The McCourts got it right. Their investment in upgrading their facilities will be paid back with new sponsorship revenue. It will become destination that will attract customer all year long and make Dodger Stadium viable for greater sponsorship revenue for a naming rights partner of the entire facility and the peripheral elements
Now they need an outstanding sponsorship agency with retail experience. hmmm. I wonder who that might be?

Blogging is a new thing for me. Sponsorship is not.
Blogging is a great tool for communicating. So is Sponsorship.
As I am working through my learning curve on best practices for blogging on sponsorships, I found a couple of great blogs and picked the brains of their owners.
Jason Peck does a blog on Sports Marketing and Frank Reed does one for small businesses on enhancing their web presence. Both are smart guys. I encourage you to check out their blogs.
They have both recommended that I switch from a site-hosted blog using blogger to wordpress.
Therefore, I have a new look. I hope you like it and subscribe, by providing your e-mail address in thebox to your left.
